Reflecting our civic association’s continued mission to be a truly independent, non-political homeowners’ and businessmen’s community advocate group, our Political Events Committee was established during the decade of 1960 – 1970. The main function of this seasonal committee is to host a “Candidates Night” forum whereby our members can see and hear all candidates, regardless of party affiliation, running for the major elected offices. These “Candidates Night” events have grown in popularity with our members, and as a result of the usually large turnout of individuals, have become a “Must Attend Event” for those seeking city, county, state and even national office. The Political Events Committee is considered to be a seasonal committee, as it activates only for those years where an election occurs.
Frequency
Candidates Night forums are held for both the primary and general elections and take place one month before the actual election date. Only bonafide candidates that have filed nominating petitions and who have confirmed their attendance to our written invitation, are allowed to address our membership at this forum. Invitations to this event are sent to the address of the candidate as filed and published by the Board of Elections Commission. Walk-ins on the night of the event will be announced, but are not permitted to speak.
Speakers
Only candidates themselves are permitted to address our membership – proxies of any type are not allowed. Each invited candidate is allotted an equal amount of time to address our membership and may have campaign staff distribute literature during their own presentation. Since these events are first and foremost for the benefit of our members, no cross examination of a speaking candidate will be allowed by any other candidate or their staff that may be present on the hall. At no time will we tolerate disruption of any candidate’s presentation by any outside individuals, groups, or opposition political organizations.
Your Voice
Our “Candidates Night” offers the seekers of elective office an opportunity to convey their platforms in an organized, open forum, governed by the Roberts Rules of Order. Questions from the audience are not only solicited, but always encouraged, and may add significantly to the education of those present. Several candidates also remain after our meetings and join us for cake and coffee to become more acquainted with our members. It is one thing to see a candidate on TV; but it’s another thing to actually see, hear and meet them in person.
