At October’s general membership meeting, AHCA President Tom Baliga shared a few great tips to help all of us keep our blocks “happy” – harmonious, safe and picture-perfect. Here’s a rundown of the best ones.
- Gangs hate landscaping. Landscaping tells them that the residents of a block are watchful and they’ll be much more likely to report suspicious behavior or graffiti. So go ahead, spend an afternoon creating some extra curb appeal!
- Be sure to change out the batteries in your smoke and CO2 detectors, and get into the regular habit of changing them when you roll back the clock or spring it forward, to ensure you’re protected.
- Recycle some of those hard-to-dispose items like paint cans, which are easy to stack up in your garage and forget all about. Simply take them to City Sanitation at 56th & Central, and STACK THEM NEATLY NEAR THE ENTRANCE. This area is open 24/7, so you can drop them off any time. Just be courteous and do so in a neat way.
- See something, say something. Speak up at the monthly CAPS meetings or privately to a beat cop or civic association officer. CAPS meetings are held the first Wednesday of every month at 7PM, at the St. Bruno school’s St. Joseph room.
- Say hello when you see your neighbors. It’s a small thing that makes a big difference. Heck, invite them to join you at the next civic association meeting!
Has it been a while since you last attended a meeting? Be sure to join us for the November session on Wednesday, November 8, at 7:30PM. We’ll meet at the UNO School cafeteria, located on the first floor.
